Congrats to Barb Kelly's rink on winning the B final at the Dominion Senior Women's Regionals at Quinte on Jan 29 ! They will go on to represent the Granite at provincials in February.

 

Team Kelly is Barb Kelly at skip, Susan Schmidt at third, Denise Hoekstra at second, and Debbie Wall at lead.

 

Good luck at the provincials in Simcoe on Feb 22.

Congratulations to both Team Mullin and Team Walker on winning at the OVCA Mixed tournament this past weekend.

 

James Mullin, Carol Tetreault, Roger Tetreault, and Leith Mullin were the overall winners in the Senior event (RA Event).

 

Bob Walker, Barbara Thompson-Walker, Paul Weedmark, and Monique Desrosiers were the winners of the 3rd event in the Open (Bud Light Event).

Greetings to all Granite curlers!  I hope you are all having a good start to 2012 and curling so far this year has been a great success.  I would like to take this time to keep you up to date of events that have happened so far this year. 

 

KITCHEN RENOS -  As many of you may have heard, your Board formed a small committee to look at the state of the club kitchen and whether we needed a kitchen, and what that kitchen needed to look like to carry us forward.  The committee decided that yes, current usage did say we needed a kitchen but that the current setup was not meeting current needs and was in danger of not meeting expected changes to health and safety rules.  At the same time, we became aware of a grant program at the Canadian Curling Association (CCA) that would make grants up to $20,000 for “Bricks and Mortar” projects.  Your Kitchen committee drew up plans and came up with estimates that would see a complete gutting of the existing kitchen, the separation of where food was stored and prepared from where garbage and cleanup was performed.  Better ovens, cook tops, refrigeration, ventilation, dishwashing, and even a sprinkler system  was designed into the new kitchen.  The estimated cost for these renovations came in at $42,550.  We submitted a proposal to the CCA and assuming we get a grant from the CCA of $20,000 then the club would be responsible for the remaining $22,550.  We have already been approached by members willing to make donations towards this project.  If any of you would like to make a tax deductable donation to the club for this project, please speak to one of your board members.

 

CAMERA SYSTEM - Dave Long, your Ice and Allocation director has been approached by a member who is willing to make a donation to the club to purchase and install 16 cameras, a computer server, four TVs and the associated wiring and software.  This camera system would allow individuals/teams to record games or practices if they so chose.  Viewers behind the glass would be able to switch any of the four TVs to any of the four cameras focused on each sheet of ice.  Where the cameras were to be placed is still up for discussion, but what we need to know is – do you want such a system installed in the club?

 

15 MIN RULE - For a while now, there has been grumbling in the club over interpretation of the “15 minute rule”.  Attached please find the board’s clarification of this rule.  Essentially, it states that the lead has to be in the hack, delivering his first stone before the clock hits the quarter to the hour. 

 

LOUNGE CHAIRS - The day ladies are looking to replace some of the chairs.  There are four sample bar chairs to be put on display for your perusal and feedback.  Please try out the chairs and provide your opinion  as to which style is the best choice to accompany our new round bar tables.

 

LEFTOVER FOOD -  People are leaving food in the refrigerator.  Once a week the bar tender will go through the fridge and throw out any food that is not specifically identified as belonging to a group or individual. 

 

VOLUNTEERS - We need volunteers.  The OVCA bonspiel is this weekend, January 21 and 22 and we need volunteers for this.  If you have any time, call the office or sign up at the board in the lounge area.  This leads me to another discussion on volunteering.  We will be starting a spreadsheet of when in the year we need volunteers and in what capacity.  We hope to have it available for the spring registration, for next year. 

 

AED/CPR TRAINING - A reminder that the AED/CPR  course will run at the Club on February 12, 2012 at 1:00 pm.   Please let Denise know if you are interested in the course 613-722-1843.  Cost is $35.00

 

ICEMAKER REQUEST - In an effort to respect the icemen and the draw following yours, please make sure that the rocks are placed in a row within the confines of the rock box.

Please stay off the ice surface until the pebble and nip is complete.

The Granite Curling Club is hosting 'Rock Hops' on Saturday afternoons for recreational curling for Junior and Bantam curlers from any club (ages 13-21).  There is no instruction provided so curlers should already be members in a Junior/Bantam program. The format is strictly recreational so no coaching or fixed teams are allowed and teams will be made up randomly each week.  The cost is $5 per person to cover the curling and pizza after the game.

Come join us from noon until 2pm for the remaining Rock Hops dates: Jan. 14, Jan. 28, Feb. 11, Mar. 10 and Mar. 24

 
Granite CC - Run by volunteers Print E-mail

Like almost all curling clubs, the Granite is run primarily by volunteers.

Leagues are organized and run by volunteers.  The same can be said for bonspiels and banquets.  Even some of the building maintenance is performed by volunteers.  Volunteer jobs can range in duration from an hour or two (to set up or clean up at a banquet) through a season-long job as a league representative up to a 3-year position with the Board of Directors.

Whatever time you have available, whatever your interests might be, whatever skills you have, there are ways that you can help make the club work for everyone.

Contact your league reps, the office or any Board member to ask what you can do.  OR  If approached to help in some way, please say "yes".
