Granite Bantams Win Zones on Home Ice
| Granite boys Peter Sinclair, Ian Rathwell, Scott
Hindle, and Andrew Denny Petch were winners in the Zone 3 Bantam Boys
playdowns on Granite ice on January 14-15. They advance to regional
playdowns at the new North Grenville Curling Club in Kemptville on
January 21-22. The boys have all curled for many years in Granite's
Little Rock and Bantam programs. |

Turkey Spiel - December 18th
The Turkey Spiel is an annual Granite event where Granite members
and their families are invited to come out and compete for a turkey.
Winners go home with turkeys. Those in second get chickens and those
in last place get eggs. It is a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed it.

Murray wins B side at J. T. Bradley Mens Spiel 10th anniversary - Nov 4-7
Kevin Murray's Rink of Blair McRae, Brad Forden, and Mike Sander won the B side at the J. T. Bradley in Navan.
This year was expanded to 38 teams with some of them coming from the
USA, Germany and the Navan surrounding area. There were a lot of good
teams and good spares (Bryan Cochrane from RCMP to name one).
Brownlee wins at Royal Kingston - Oct. 30th
Congratulations to the winners of the Royal Kingston Curling Club
Limestone Seniors Classic held October 30th. The winners were Fred
Brownlee (skip), Geoff Wilson, Gerry Allen, and Cliff Reddick.
Opening Bonspiel (Sept. 29 - Oct. 1)
64 players competed in two draws to open the club for the 2005/6
season. The event went as expected - a good time was had getting back
on the ice and seeing old friends! This years winners were:

the Roy Event in the LCA Macdonald/Paterson/Roy bonspiel on March 24,
2005.
City of Ottawa Winners
We had two winning rinks in the 2005 City of Ottawa this year: one
from the Open and one from the Seniors.
Walker Rink Wins Event 23 - Premier Construction Trophy
Congratulations to Bob Walker, Geoff Wilson, Bob Pentland, and
Fred Brownlee. Their final record was 6 wins and 2 losses.
Long Rink Wins Event 6 - Martin Trophy
Congratulations to Dave Long, Jay Blackwood, Gerry Vandevalk, and
Mark Ronan. Their final record was 6 wins and 2 losses.
Tretreault RInk to Play in Intermediate Womens Provincial
Congratulations to the Tetreault Rink. The rink of Skip-Carol
Tetreault, 3rd- Debbie McRae, 2nd- Gwen Reimer, and Lead- Donna Tallon
won the "A" side of Intermediate Ladies and will play in Provincials
starting March 16th.

Congratulation so the Bev McAskin rink, the winners of the Ottawa
Crystal Heart Curling Classic Seniors Section. Team members are Bev
McAskin, Pat Riddell, Peggy Gray, and Barb Hunter.
Coulthart Rink wins Scott Street Spiel

Josh Adam's rink made it to the Men's Provincials.
Merklinger Rink Wins Zones - Nov. 21st
The Merklinger Rink won the Zone 3, B side, for Junior Women. The
lineup is a little different due to an injured lead: Lee Merklinger,
Leslie Levere, Lisa Weagle and Bethan Dinning. Breanne Merklinger is
now playing fifth and Bruce Merklinger is coaching.
MacLeod wins LCA Centennial Shield - November 18
The Eunice MacLeod team won the LCA Centennial Shield on November 18, 2004
at Hudson, Quebec. Team members: Eunice MacLeod, Fran Olson, Wendy Kelly,
Eileen Wilson.
MacLeod wins LCA Centennial - November 12
Eunice MacLeod, Fran Olson, Wendy Kelly and Eileen Wilson of Granite
defeated Diane Harris of City View 11-3 to win the LCA Centeniial.
Adams Wins OVCT Ottawa Curling Club Cash - Oct. 11
Josh Adams' team of Spencer Cooper, Keith Coulthart and Paul Wood
won the OVCT Ottawa Curling Club Cash. They did so by beating Guy
Charette 5-3 in the final. They beat Merklinger Granite team (Lee
Merklinger, Leslie Levere, Lisa Weagle and Breanne Merklinger) in the

Stefanison wins Skins - April 7th
This year's Skins was played with a very strong field of curlers. Steve Stefansion's
rink of John Lockett, Gerry Vandevalk, and Sue Biscope came away as the winners. This is
the second year in a row where Steve has won.
McAskin wins 100th Anniversary Royal Caledonian
Bev McAskin and her rink of Pat Riddel, Ursula Anderson and Barb Hunter were
the B Winners of the 100th Anniversary Bonspiel of the Ladies Curling
Association of the Canadian Branch of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club held
in Montreal. They received a commemorative banner marking the 100th
anniversary of the LCA and their achievement. To qualify for this bonspiel
in Montreal involving teams from Quebec and Eastern Ontario, the McAskin
rink first won the District 2 LCA bonspiel held here in Ottawa in which 40
rinks participated. Well done!
Merklinger Mixed Wins Junior Mixed Provincials

Kevin Murray, Blair McRae, Brad Forden, and Mike Sander won the Safeguard Businees
Systems Trophy (the 3rd event) at the City of Ottawa Bonspiel.
Attfield wins Branch - March 21st
The skip Gary Attfield, 3rd Beverly Attfield, 2nd Andrew Willman and lead
Melissa Skrebutenas won at the Junior Branch competition on Sunday March
21st. They move onto the Royal Caledonia playdown in Bedford Quebec on
March 27 & 28. However, Skip Gary Attfield will not be able to attend
because he will be curling in the
OFSSA Provincials in Sudbury.
Scott Hindle will be the skip in Bedford on behalf of Gary Attfield.
Sir Robert Borden High Team headed to OFSSA Provincials
We have 3 Bantam Curlers from Granite (skip Gary Attfield, 2nd Jake
Attfield and lead Ian Rathwell) who are on the Sir Robert Borden High
School team. They won the gold for this region and are off to Sudbury on
Tuesday, March 23rd for the
OFSSA Provincials.

Merklinger Mixed Win Regional
Lee Merklinger, Peter Gillich, Breanne Merklinger, and Brian Fleischaker
have won at the regionals and will represent the Granite at the Provinicials

Ceremonial Throw a Winner!
Charter Member Ruth Jamieson (now 89) threw a rock to re-enact the throwing of the first rock 50 years ago.
Kip Murchison held the broom as Ruth put the rock on the tee line without any sweeping from Doug
McKercher or Ralph Sweet! What a throw!

50th Anniversary Bonspiel
The 50th Anniversary Bonspiel completed Sunday, February 22nd and was a great success. The format mixed
players from across the club, mixing Bantams and Juniors with Day curlers, Weekend players with Evening players,
day curlers with evening ones - every combination imanginable. Everyone seemed to enjoy the spiel and wondered
if we could repeat this more option than every 50 years!
The Gold Event winners of the spiel were the team of Blair McRae, Kryle Farmer,
Sylvia Dworschak, and John Sherar. Bill Adair, Catherine Burnside, Alan Sentence,
and Steven DiFilippo won the Silver Event. For all the results click here.
Granite Sweeps Zone 3 OCA Trophy and Colts - February 7-8
Granite swept the Zone 3 OCA Trophy and Colts, winning both A and B sides! All are off to the

Merklinger Team off to a Good Start
It looks like we've gotten a littel behind reporting on the Merklinger team
(Lee Merklinger [skip], Leslie Levere, Lisa Weagle and Breanne Merklinger - coached by Bruce Merklinger).
So here's a summary of how they've been doing.
- Merklinger won the A side of the Junior Ladies Zones (Nov 21-22) in Deep River.
They advance to Regionals (Nov 29-30) at the Gananoque Curling Club.
- Merklinger qualified at the OVCA Junior Superspiel (Oct 31-Nov 2) and lost the quarter-finals, winning $500.
- Merklinger won the third event at the London Junior Bonspiel (Oct 24-26) with a 5-2 record.
- Merklinger won the consolation event at the Oakville Junior Invitational (Oct 11-12),
after losing the semi to Kelly Cochrane (the spiel winner).
- Merklinger team 3-2 at the Montreal Open, (Oct 2-5) a woman's spiel
where the two games they lost were close ones to Sherry Anderson and Suzanne Gaudet (the spiel winner).
Bantams win at Pepsi-Cola Junior/Bantam Bonspiel, November 15-16
The bantam team of Scott Hindle, Ian Rathwell, Andrew Denny, and Peter Sinclair
won the second event in the bantam section of the Pepsi-Cola Junior/Bantam Bonspiel
at the Royal Kingston Curling Club. Well done guys!

Josh Adams in the Quarter finals OVCT Parliament Cup
October 8th - Josh made it to the quarter finals playing third for at the OVCT Parliament Cup,
the 2nd event in the Ottawa Valley Curling Tour.
Josh was playing third on Craig Saville's rink.
FYI - "The OVCT was founded to provide a venue for teams in the Ottawa Valley to compete
in higher quality curling events than were previously available. In it's inaugural 2001 - 2002
season the OVCT consisted of 5 events and a tour championship in which teams competed
for in excess of $65,000. In the 2002 - 2003 season the OVCT was composed of
5 events in which teams again competed for over $65,000."

Stefanison Wins 2003 Granite Skins Game
Steve Stefanison, Brian Gatenby, Gerry Vandevalk, and Kevin Murray
cruised through the first two draws of the 2003 Skins at the Granite on
April 7-9th, not losing any skins. In the third draw they only needed
to win $4 to ensure the win of the competition and their names on the
trophy. In fact, they won the first 3 skins of the third draw for the
needed $4 and then the juggernaut lost steam giving up the rest of the
skins in a hard fought game. Congratulations guys!
Waterrud a City of Ottawa Winner
Congratulations to Ernie Watterud, Lloyd Brown (third), Laurie Hunter (second), and George Earnshaw (lead)
for their win of Event 27, the Prothec Mechanical Plumbing and Heating Trophy.
Big Cash for a Big Score
Marc Wigle's team won the "best one game" score at the Richmond
Curling Club's bonspiel held on March 1st. The prize money was a whopping $100. The team has
David Evraire as lead, Wayne Beamish as second, Paul Lavergne as third, and Marc Wigle as skip.
Well done boys!
Bantam Boys Onward!
Congratulations should go to Gary Attfield, Kent Neale, Jake Attfield and John Sherar
who won the A side final of the Zone 3 Bantam boys and are on their way to regional
competition in Smith Falls later this month.
Battle of the Sexes
Well, it looks like the men had the edge this year, but the women had
the best posters (thanks Kathy). The top male finishers are as follows:
Ted Weagle (best male over-all), Keith Coulthart (next in line to the
throne), Pierre Chantal (sure-shot to the button) and Bill Adair
(sure-shot under pressure).
The ladies didn't manage to whip the men on the ice, but probably did later in the evening. (You men have Wes to thank.)
The top women include:
Ling Hung, Brenda Chapman, Sylvia Dworschak and Mary Betts.
7 and Under McCallum Filly - Hamilton Shield Competition
Congratulations to Judy Sagle, Sylvia Dworschak, Mona Simpson, and Pat
Sherar who won the first leg of the seven-and-under competition, the McCallum Filly - Hamilton Shield,
(for LCA curlers with 7 years or less experience). This is this game they have played together in competition.
We wish them success in the playdowns in Alexandria on February 22nd.
Crystal Heart Results

All Granite Final at Seniors Crystal Heart!
Bev McAskin defeated Dorthy Shaw in the 1st Event of the Seniors division of the
Crystal Heart Curling Classic on February 9th.
Congratulations to Bev McAskin, Pat Riddel, Peggy Gray, and Bary Hunter for your win,
and also to Dorothy Shaw, Catherine Burnside, Debbie Sentance, and Ann Hagbourg for your second place finish.
Walker Master's Team to Provincial
Congratulations to all the Bob's and John too!
Men's Masters Team (60+) skipped by Bob Walker is going to the
Provincials in Ennismore on the 19-23 of February. The Regional masters
were held in Renfrew on January 25- 26, 2003.
Bob's team played Eldon Coombe from the Hunt Club in the A side final and lost.
Their next game was the B side final against Ken Ross from the Ottawa
Curling Club which they won. Members of Bob Walker's team are:

Josh Adams and Spencer Cooper win in Utica
Josh Adams (our ice guy), as vice, and Spencer Cooper, as second, won the "Famous Mitchell Bonspiel" in
Whitesboro, New York on January 12th.

Merklinger Junior Women win 2nd at Provincials
The Merklinger team came in 2nd in the round robin play, advanced to the final against Stephanie Gray,
the only undefeated rink. They were tied going into the tenth end without the hammer and lost 8-6.
Zone Winners
Four Granite teams won the zones in Carp mid-december 2002.
These include Bill Adair, Rick McMullin, Carol Tetrault and Susan Schmidt.
These teams move on to the regional competitions in Stirling in April 2003.
Merklinger Junior Women win TCA Energizer Bonspiel
Team Merklinger won the TCA Energizer Junior Bonspiel on December 29-30th, after playing four games undefeated.
They faced Julie Reddick in the semi-final, beating her by two points, then in the final they beat the
Swiss team in a close game that came down to an extra end.
The prize for winning is an 11 day trip to Switzerland, which the girls will leave for on February 16th.
Congratulations to Lee Merklinger, Leslie Levere, Lisa Weagle, and Breanne Merklinger.
Eigher Ender
Congratulations to Allison Rodgers who scored an eight ender as vice
with the Irvin team at the Bantam Cash Spiel held at the club on Dec.
28-20. More information on this on the Eight Enders page.
Turkey Spiel
The annual Turkey Spiel was held on Sunday, Dec. 15th. 32 teams participated and were split
into two draws.
The winners of each draw walked away with a turkey.
Second place won a chicken and the last place team got a dozen eggs.

Congratulations to Ted Weagle, winner of the Mens Hot Shot Competition with 25 points!
Marc Wigle came in second with 24. The competition was on December 12th.
Merklinger Junior Girls team Wins!
Lee Merklinger, Leslie Levere, Lisa Weagle, and Breanne Merklinger,
coached by Bruce Merklinger, won the "A" side of the Regional Playdown
on December 1, 2002 and will now move on to the Provincials being held
on January 7, 2003 at the Brant Curling Club. See the OCA site
